Medical Units: Ophthalmology

Eye health is an integral part of our overall health, and regular check-ups are important to preserve our vision. Eye clinics offer a variety of services specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of various eye problems.

Services Offered at Our Eye Clinic

Eye clinics provide a wide range of services. These services include prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses for refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), cataract surgery, treatment of retinal diseases, and surgical procedures for eyelids. These services, provided by specialists in their fields, are supported by modern technology and current treatment methods.

Regular Check-ups for Your Eye Health

Eye clinics are ideal for routine eye examinations and regular check-up visits at specified intervals. These check-ups enable early detection and effective treatment of eye diseases. Regular evaluation of existing vision defects and necessary corrections is also important.

The Role of Technology in Eye Clinics

With advances in technology, eye clinics have made significant progress in treatment and diagnosis methods. For example, refractive surgical procedures such as LASIK using laser technology offer a safe and effective option to correct vision defects. Additionally, digital imaging systems and advanced imaging devices enhance the diagnostic process and support treatment planning.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors occur when there is an abnormality in the eye's refractive power. This condition typically manifests as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (blurred focus of light). Myopia results from an elongated eyeball, while hyperopia stems from a shorter than normal eyeball. Astigmatism occurs due to irregular curvature of the cornea or lens.

Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery encompasses surgical procedures aimed at reducing or eliminating the use of glasses or contact lenses. These surgeries are commonly performed to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The most commonly used refractive surgical procedures include LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy).

About Excimer Laser

Excimer laser is a specialized type of laser used in refractive surgery. This laser can shape the corneal tissue by removing it in very thin layers. Excimer laser works precisely on the cornea to correct refractive errors and enables rapid healing post-surgery.

LASIK: What Is It?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a commonly performed refractive surgical method to correct vision defects. In this procedure, the upper layer of the cornea (epithelium) is lifted, the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped with a laser, and the epithelium is replaced. LASIK procedure is generally painless and offers a fast recovery process.

How LASIK Is Performed?

LASIK procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia. It begins with lifting the epithelium, the upper layer of the cornea, in the form of a flap using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser. Subsequently, the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped with an Excimer laser to correct refractive errors. The epithelial flap is then repositioned, initiating the eye's natural healing process.

Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses (Phaco Method - Smart Lenses)

Cataract is the clouding of the eye lens associated primarily with aging. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Phaco method utilizes ultrasonic energy to fragment and remove the cataractous lens. Smart lenses are advanced IOLs designed with features like multifocality or toricity to enhance the patient's visual quality.

Retinal Diseases and Vitreoretinal Surgery

Retinal diseases encompass various conditions affecting the retina layer and can often lead to vision loss. These conditions include retinal tears, retinal detachment, macular hole, among others. Vitreoretinal surgery involves surgical techniques and methods used to treat complex retina and vitreous (inner eye gel) problems.

Eyelid Disorders

Eyelid disorders include various infections, tumors, degenerative diseases, or traumas affecting the eyelids. Problems with the eyelids are typically treated by eye surgeons or plastic surgeons and can have significant impacts on vision health.

Pediatric Eye Diseases

Pediatric eye diseases encompass various eye health issues occurring from birth to adolescence. These issues include congenital cataracts, strabismus (squint), amblyopia (lazy eye), blepharospasm (eye twitching), among others. Early diagnosis and treatment can positively influence children's visual development.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure leading to optic nerve fiber damage and permanent vision loss. Glaucoma is typically defined as a progressive disease and can be controlled with early diagnosis. Treatment options include eye drops, surgical interventions, or laser treatments.

Eye Diseases

  • Glaucoma: Optic nerve damage due to increased intraocular pressure.

  • Cataract: Clouding of the eye lens leading to visual impairment.

  • Keratitis (Corneal Infection): Severe eye infection resulting from inflammation of the cornea.

  • Retinal Tear: Tearing of the retina leading to risk of retinal detachment.

  • Retinopathy of Prematurity: Developmental disorder of the retina in premature babies.

  • Color Blindness: Visual disorder where colors are not perceived correctly.

  • Stye (Hordoleum): Small swelling on the eyelid due to infection.

  • Conjunctivitis (Eye Irritation): Inflammation of the eye surface causing redness and watering.

  • Keratoconus: Distortion of the cornea resulting in visual impairment.

  • Nystagmus (Eye Tremor): Involuntary trembling or shaking of the eyes.

  • Strabismus (Eye Misalignment): Condition where eyes do not align properly.

  • Night Blindness (Nyctalopia): Visual impairment due to Vitamin A deficiency or genetic factors.

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Condition involving damage to the central vision area due to aging.

  • Chalazion (Eyelid Cyst): Cyst formed due to blockage of the eyelid gland.

  • Trachoma: Eye infection causing sores and scars on the eyelids.

Eye Disease Treatments

  • Excimer Laser Eye Surgery: Laser surgery used to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

  • Smart Lenses: Innovative lens options used in cataract surgery or refractive surgery.

  • Corneal Transplant (Keratoplasty): Surgical procedure involving replacement of the corneal tissue.

  • Eyelid Plastic Surgery: Surgical procedure for aesthetic or health-related eyelid issues.

  • Corneal Cross-Linking: Procedure used in the treatment of corneal diseases like keratoconus.

  • Low Vision Rehabilitation Therapy: Treatment methods involving special exercises and techniques for visual impairments.

  • Oculoplasty: Surgical treatment of aesthetic and functional issues around the eyes.
